The Bedi Hanuman Temple, situated on the shore of Puri, is dedicated to Lord Hanuman, also known as Daria Mahavir, the protector of the sea. According to local lore, Lord Hanuman was placed here by Lord Jagannath to calm the turbulent sea and prevent it from encroaching upon the Jagannath Temple. The word "Bedi" refers to the chains or shackles symbolically placed on Hanuman to restrict his movement, reminding him of his duty to guard the coastline.
